Our Attorneys Advocate for Victims of Connecticut Hit-and-Run Accidents

Recovering compensation when a negligent driver absconds

Hit-and-run accidents can leave you not only physically injured, but psychologically shaken and angry. People who flee the scene without stopping to see if you are all right or exchange insurance information are committing a crime and should be held accountable for their actions. Unfortunately, sometimes tracking them down can prove to be quite difficult.

Yet, with The Pickel Law Firm, LLC on your side, you can still recover compensation for your injuries and automobile damages. We may even be able to track down the at-fault driver to recover compensation.

Tracking down the negligent driver who fled the accident scene

The Pickel Law Firm, LLC takes a comprehensive, two-fold approach when handling hit-and-run car accident cases. Not only do we carefully analyze police reports, interview witnesses and track down surveillance cameras that might have captured the incident on tape, but we also explore all possible lines of insurance on which to make your claims.

Why negligent drivers flee

A person who flees the scene of an accident is typically attempting to avoid more serious consequences. For example, it is common for a high or drunk driver to circumvent DUI charges by evading capture long enough to sober up. Likewise, a driver whose reckless driving caused a fatal car accident may take the chance of obstructing prosecution on vehicular homicide charges. However, the General Statutes of Connecticut CGS § 14-224 imposes strict criminal penalties on drivers who are convicted of leaving the scene of an accident, including:

  • Accidents causing serious physical injuries or death — up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine and at least a one-year driver’s license suspension for a first offender
  • Accidents causing physical injuries or property damages — up to one year incarceration and $600 fine and at least 90 days driver’s license suspension

While Connecticut law enforcement officers and prosecutors pursue criminal means of holding hit-and-run drivers responsible for making our roadways dangerous, our lawyers advocate for your rights in the civil courts and assist you as a victim in the criminal courts to ensure that the hit-and-run driver is held accountable for his/her crime.
