Alcohol as a factor in Connecticut traffic deaths
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 220 people died in Connecticut traffic accidents in 2011. Alcohol impairment was a factor in 92 of the fatal traffic crashes that year. These victims of drunk driving constituted a shocking 42 percent of the total traffic deaths in the state.
Distracted driving contributes to the number of fatal traffic accidents
Each day more than nine Americans are killed and more than 1,060 are injured in distracted driving-related collisions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In distracted driving scenarios, drivers engage in a variety of inappropriate tasks that require them to:
- Take their eyes off the road — visual distraction
- Take their hands off the wheel — manual distraction
- Take their minds off driving — cognitive distraction
In 2010, the NHTSA partnered with Connecticut and New York to implement programs designed to limit distracted driving and increase awareness about its hazards. The campaign primarily targets handheld cellphone use and texting — activities that have proliferated and that involve visual, manual and cognitive distractions.
Fatal reckless actions of motorists
Motorists undertake an important responsibility. One wrong move and a reckless driver can cause serious injuries or death. Motorcyclists are placed at particular risk — accounting for 36 of the traffic fatalities in CT in 2011, according to the NHTSA. Pedestrians and cyclists also face traffic deaths on Connecticut’s roadways — including 26 pedestrians and eight cyclists killed by automobiles in the state that year. Some of the crashes could have been avoided had the drivers acted cautiously and been considerate toward these less visible people who have a right to share the roads.
